Befriending Wildflowers – An Art Retreat July 12, 13 and 14, 2018 Qu’Appelle House of Prayer near Fort Qu’Appelle
Something draws me each summer to the prairie wildflowers in our coulee and valley hills and grasslands. I love to get up early in the morning, pack a thermos of tea and my paints, and see which flower seems to ask for my attention. Attempting to paint a flower with watercolours gives me a chance to really see that particular plant. It is one way of getting to know a flower. In truth, I can never quite express what it is I find most compelling, but I absolutely love trying. I always feel as if I know that plant a little better after spending time together in this way.
What Will We Do:
- walk the hills
- sit in stillness
- share ways of showing gratitude to the plants and flowers
- consider together how best to befriend a plant
- participate in drawing exercises, watercolour mixing and painting, introduction to plant structure, approaches to seeing a plant (optional)
- learn about the plants we see
- spend free time alone
- sharing circle
- consider the role of plants as we eat healthy meals together
Who should come?
The Qu’Appelle House of Prayer is a retreat centre nestled in 10 acres on the verdant south side hills of Echo Lake near Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. Many people feel a tranquil spirit in the air as soon as they get out of their vehicles. The intentionally quiet atmosphere invites us to really notice and sink into the natural world around us. Accommodations are comfortable and simple; home cooked meals nourish both body and soul. Founded and co-directed by Glenn Zimmer, an Oblate priest, and Margaret Dick, a Holy Names sister, the Qu’Appelle House of Prayer welcomes all with an open heart. There are trails throughout the property, and a stunning chapel looking over the trees and lake, and out to the hills. While the wildflowers on the hills and grasslands are a particular draw, there are green growing plants and trees everywhere you look- in the woods, in the gardens, and indoors.
